-by Jenn Smith-Williams and Susie K. Reat

Susie Reat and I are co-founders of  the community group, Kidney Contenders in Austin, TX.  Our reasons behind the formation of our group was due to a lack of awareness in mainstream Texas media about the hazardous of living with renal failure, specifically Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in Austin, TX.

The biggest component that defines Kidney Contenders is the educational one.

Kidney Contenders group has taken the initiative to promote kidney health awareness in the state of Texas.  At fifty-four years of age and twenty-nine years of age respectfully, Susie and I involve various Texas community groups under our Kidney Contenders name for health care and National Kidney Foundation events.

Our goal since May 22, 2011, is to collectively and cohesively bring awareness to our fellow Texans about the health issues that develop as the result of renal failure. A few of these health issues are cardiac disease, autoimmune disease, increase in blood pressure, etc. All of these diseases, if not treated appropriately and timely with medical supervision, will result in sooner rather than later death.

Kidney Contenders seek clinical guidance from fellow Nephrologists and Nephrology Register Nurses before printing out any medical educational material for distribution. We seek wisdom from all types of periodicals as well, including the popular Nutricula Magazine.

Our goal as Kidney Contenders is to acquaint ourselves with individuals that work for institutions that can assist the public with kidney awareness.

These individuals and their institutions define how Kidney Contenders function as a group to the community. The idea behind the creation of our group derives from many questions of why and how kidney disease is such a prevalent matter throughout the world. We understand the issues that our group can potentially  face and do face on the best method for getting our fellow citizens to understand the difference between supporting kidney awareness through monetary donations and volunteer work, and actually applying their knowledge  from educational material to use.

Many times people are not concerned about applying the education behind the awareness as much as they are concerned about how not to develop sickness through “quick fix” medications that may do more harm than good.  Resorting to laymen terms does not guarantee that our education will be comprehended either.

It is a particular challenge educating the public on a complex medical topic, such as kidney disease. Testimonials from patients and families which illustrate both problems and potential therapies can help explain the topic, however, educating the public is still a factor that does not have 100% resolution. This is the primary factor that Kidney Contenders is working on.

To resolve some of the issues with how to educate the public, our group rely on creative means, such as music and fine arts, in addition to our medical literature. We host a Cause Meets Music event in May that showcase musicians playing music simultaneously with filtration rate of human kidneys.

Kidney Contenders does not compete for the same dollars as other “not-for profit” organizations do; as a result, we use our own income and assistance from “not-for profits” that are willing to temporarily partner with our group to ensure our events are successful.

Reflecting on the past two years and the years to come, our group is starting to see more prosaic things occur for our community as the result of our efforts. On June 7, 2012,  the state of Texas will allow Kidney Contenders to address adult stem cell and IPS research as a possible resolution for kidney failure.

Our goal will always be to educate our community first on what is important rather than what is in fashion, the next “magic pill”, or quick fixes that only hinder overall health.

Change starts with each individual taking ownership of their own health, and then assisting others with their knowledge.
